Public Service Announcements on Homelessness

Action in Motion

In October 2006, Homeless Awareness Calgary Committee (HACC) had the honour of presenting to the Grade 5 classes at Glendale Elementary School.

The Grade 5 Students had been reading current events in the newspaper and had decided that they would like to learn more about homelessness in Calgary. Their teachers, Ms Liddell and Ms Temrick supported the students 100% and began to invite different groups in to speak to the students about homelessness.

Over the course of the winter months the students heard from speakers from various organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Calgary Food Bank, Calgary Urban Projects Society (CUPS) and HACC. The students also visited The Mustard Seed and CUPS.

After months of learning about homelessness the students decided they wanted to make a difference. Rather than give money, the students felt that they could best help by spreading awareness. To make this happen, they invited a media specialist into their classroom to teach them how to create Public Service Announcements (PSA’s).

At the beginning of March the students held an “Awareness Night” and launched their Public Service Announcements. The PSA’s are written, directed, videoed, edited and starred in by the students themselves!

These young citizens (and future leaders) have done an amazing job and Homeless Awareness Calgary Committee (HACC) is proud to showcase the success of the students!
